Europe Autumn Live Finals Preview

TeaserArticle-Header

The North America Autumn champions have been crowned, and now it’s Europe’s time to shine. The Europe Autumn Live Finals begins Friday, Dec. 11 at 3PM CET / 6AM PST / 9AM EST at twitch.tv/vainglory.

After series of qualification tournaments filled with massive upsets and upstart teams, we’ll find out who can emerge from a point standings ladder that was literally turned upside-down. When it comes to the EU Live Finals, throw the seeds out the window because of the amount of talent toward the bottom is immense. Let’s look at the teams playing live in Katowice, Poland …

MEET THE TEAMS

RebirthKindgom(1) REBIRTH OF EMPIRE

Coming off of a dominant performance in the online qualifiers, Rebirth of Empire is looking for a repeat performance at the Autumn Live Finals. Expect to see them come out of the gates swinging.

  • Autumn Finals roster: UpFyr, GreatkhALI, nettetoillette
  • One2Watch: Greatkhali
  • They win if … the synergy between these teammates continues to be splendid, with great positioning and individually strong mechanics. Having map vision and focusing more on objectives will lead them to the win.
  • They lose if … they don’t capitalize from enemy mistakes, playing a bit too passive when they should aggress.

RebelTigeR (2) REBELTIGER

What started off as a roster put together to have a bit of fun in ranked turned into a powerhouse team and second seed. That said, this Cinderella squad will not be using the same roster as the qualifiers, which raises some questions about their true strength in this tournament.

  • Autumn Finals roster: CJMantle, legendARIEs, Akuma
  • One2Watch: Akuma
  • They win if … their momentum and confidence from the qualifiers successfully carries into the Autumn Finals.

  • They lose if … their modified roster doesn’t come together fast enough. Synergy is definitely a signature of Tiger, and keeping teamwork and emotions together will be key.

Snow(3) SNOW

Team SNOW is Europe’s VON Menace. This is the team others don’t want to face — and the team for which all others are most preparing. SNOW stuck together through and placed exceptionally well in both online qualifiers. They’re now looking to follow their namesake and stay cool under pressure in these high-stakes live matches. Watch for player lookatme to display excellent mechanical skills, map awareness and to counter-jungle whenever possible.

  • Autumn Finals roster: lookatme, araxi, Kentysik, SNOWflake, artur123
  • One2Watch: lookatme
  • They win if … they have strong synergy, especially during teamfights. Also, this team has a large hero pool that should be used wisely during draft picks.
  • They lose if … members of the team start thinking independently, making reckless mistakes during shot-calling and objective-taking.

(4) ANGRY PANDAS

As their name suggests, these Pandas are looking to crush their opponents with pure aggression if given the chance. Though with xuanxuan’s reputation for, shall we say, alternative strategies, we could be in for a treat. Keep an eye on xuanxuan’s wonderful positioning in teamfights and aggressive jungle-stealing plays.

  • Autumn Finals roster: LeyaLeya, XuanXuan, Daniir, Xinyi
  • One2Watch: xuanxuan
  • They win if … they capture lightning in a bottle again and go on another deep run.
  • They lose if … opponents are able to effectively fend off early aggression with passive play, three-player lane pushes or rotations into enemy side jungle.

BlackHawk(5) BLACK HAWK

Not ones to make the first mistake, Black Hawk are always a bit wary early on in their battles. However, once they have properly identified their opponents’ weak points, they are sure to strike for the kill.

  • Autumn Finals roster: ColdICE, Sosiska, Bashn, LasKA,
  • One2Watch: Bashn
  • They win if … securing a more balanced comp during drafts helps ease these players into their power spikes. Bashn needs to make sure to prioritize vision across the jungle to ensure they are the ones to have the first jump.

  • They lose if … drafting out unbalanced comps makes matters too tough in the early game. Having trouble in objective control will only make things harder for Black Hawk.

 G2Kinguin(6) G2.KINGUIN

G2.Kinguin in some ways is a victim of their own success. By winning the first qualifier, they earned the right to send a team to VIPL in Korea. But by splitting a winning squad on a roll, they’ll have a harder time with the stiff competition in Katowice. Starting laner Reddix and starting roamer AsiFloH are in Korea, putting immense pressure on D1ngo and DarkPotato to perform in the Autumn Finals. One advantage G2.Kinguin retains is positively superior draft strategy, utilizing DarkPotato’s 20-hero-deep pool to force enemy carries off comfort picks and onto third-choice heroes. G2.Kinguin has a tough draw in SNOW for Match 1 but has the quality to survive the losers’ bracket and take that road to the semis, if need be.

  • Autumn Finals roster: D1ngo, Zynthox, DarkPotato, Kwin
  • One2Watch: D1ngo
  • They win if … they secure an advantage in the draft, either by eliminating roamers or forcing opponents onto uncomfortable heroes. By playing smart and not being too aggressive, they’ll take advantage of their typical mid/late-scaling comps.
  • They lose if … not having jungle vision in the early/mid-game proves too costly. G2’s shot-calling will need to be on point, as overextending before teamfights start has proved troublesome for them at times.

(7) SK CHIMAERA

While SK is brimming with playmaking talent, they will terribly miss RedWolf, the #1-ranked player in Europe, whose travel papers will not be in order until Winter Season events. This will require WalDeMar to step up and fill those shoes, but this player previously known as BestCelesteEU has absolutely stolen the show with big plays in past events and is capable of doing so on the big stage. SK’s cornerstone player will be jetpacks, who displays excellent positioning, consistently great KDAs, a wide range of heroes and a signature playstyle. When possible, jetpacks prefers to play as a “second roamer,” collecting defensive items and focusing on keeping his lane carry alive. But jetpacks may need to adjust his focus and playstyle depending on matchups and the success of WalDeMar in lane. The eternal question is: Will we see jetpacks’ Krul?

  • Autumn Finals roster: MYQ, WalDeMar, Jetpacks
  • One2Watch: jetpacks
  • They win if … this RedWolf-less threesome can perform as a unit. All three are mechanically sound with plenty of experience, but they’ll need to make more big, highlight-reel plays than any other team to pull out wins.
  • They lose if … hero comps become a question mark and storyline. SK prefers mid/late-game scaling comps, but they have to figure out what will work best with this starting group of three. Should they not choose a more balanced comp after the roster changes, they might have a hard time getting to those later power spikes.

mediapixel(8) MEDIA PIXEL eSPORT

MediaPixel sends a rock-solid and feared roster to Katowice, and they’re widely considered one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament.

This is a team that, even when behind, you can’t ever count them out, and all eyes will be on Media Pixel to see if they can perform under the bright lights. One player almost certain to shine is Mowglie, who has been called the “LostBoyToph of Europe.”

  • Autumn Finals roster: Mowglie, Palmatoro, KValafar
  • One2Watch: Mowglie
  • They win if … pre-draft planning pays off, devising possibilities and strategies for each team. Their strengths include highly coordinated plays with tremendous positioning. Having vision and map awareness will help them excel in this tournament.

  • They lose if … they get beat during picks & bans and let sneaky/aggressive comps through. The team compositions for MP usually require a lot of synergy, so all members need to show up big time in Poland.

SCHEDULE

The tournament follows a double-elimination group stage and single-elimination semifinals and finals. Each round of matches is a best-of-three series. The Grand Finals will be best-of-five.

KESTREL UPDATE (1.12) NOTES: GIFT-WRAPPED JUST FOR YOU

  • Vainglory

  • Dec 08, 2015

Update 1.12 includes a new archer hero, a limited-edition holiday skin, major stability & performance improvements and meta-shifting balance changes. Let’s take a look …

Kestrel_splash_art

KESTREL BACKGROUND & LORE

Kestrel is an elite Stormguard archer who takes down targets from a distance. When building weapon, she deals rapid, sustained damage and uses stealth to find better footing when enemies get too close. Kestrel’s crystal path affords longer stealth times, which sets up aggressive tactical plays. She’s best in the lane where she can use the protection of her turret to safely collect gold.

Want to know more about Kestrel? Read her interconnected lore with fellow Stormguard soldier, Catherine.

KESTREL EARLY-ACCESS PERIOD

Kestrel will be unlockable with ICE only for the first 7 days. Afterward, you will be able to unlock Kestrel with ICE or Glory.

header_features_new

ADRENALINE (HEROIC PERK)

Whenever Kestrel lands a basic attack, she gains attack speed and reduces the cost of her abilities. This stacks up to 5 times and and wears off after a short time.

Kestral_ A_02GLIMMERSHOT

Kestrel fires an arrow, landing an armor-piercing basic attack on the first target in its path. The arrow then pierces through, dealing crystal damage to the target and other enemies behind it. Kestrel can keep several arrows in reserve. After a duration without using her bow, these arrows are automatically reloaded. Reload time is decreased based on attack speed.

Kestral_ BACTIVE CAMO

Kestrel instantly vanishes from sight and gains bonus move speed. Additionally, she leaves an invisible phosphor mist at her location, revealing enemies as they walk through it. If Kestrel deals damage to an enemy hero within the mist, the mist will detonate, damaging and stunning all enemies within its area.

Kestrel’s basic attacks reduce the cooldown of Active Camo. However, Active Camo cannot be triggered while Kestrel is taking damage from an enemy hero, putting it on cooldown. The length of time Active Camo is disabled is reduced by bonus weapon power.

Kestral_CONE SHOT. ONE KILL.

After a delay, Kestrel fires a single arrow across the fold, impacting on the first enemy hero, large creature or structure in its path. When this hits an enemy hero, it reveals that hero and grants Kestrel full Adrenaline stacks. This deals reduced damage to non-heroes.

The base damage dealt by this ability is weapon damage. Higher ranks of this ability gain armor piercing.

 header_performance_improvements_new

“After our less-than-ideal Update 1.11 roll-out, we paused our feature roadmap to focus on improving service stability in 1.12. It simply didn’t make sense to attempt to roll out more new features if service quality was in question. We focused in this cycle on three things in particular: slow responsiveness on calls like friend accepts, improved reliability of match accepts and end of match screens, and overall server stability by optimizing server calls across the board.
“We will be monitoring these closely as 1.12 rolls out, and once we’re satisfied that stability overall is back to levels that we expect, we will turn our attention to investigating ping times.” —EdTheShred

SERVICE QUALITY

  • Improved reliability of match notifications
    • Few issues with players get into their matches
    • Fewer incorrect bans for declining
  • Fixed an issue that could cause regional outages
  • Improved reliability of network connectivity between our servers in Europe region

  • Increased efficiency in communication between our servers
    • Less contention for network on game servers
    • Increased speed and reliability of starting matches
  • Improved the performance of the Friends list
  • Improved connectivity and performance of chat

 ANDROID IMPROVEMENTS

“Previously, people without 3GB of free disk space on their internal storage just could not play the game. Now that is no longer a restriction, as you can install to an SD card. If you know anyone who couldn’t play because of disk space issues, let them know about this improvement!” —BlasterMaster
  • Now able to install Vainglory to an SD card. If you have an SD card with enough disk space for the game present, you will get a pop-up with a choice to install to your SD card.
  • Smaller Vainglory app file size. (iOS file size also improved.)
  • Game will look more crisp on certain Android devices
  • Fixed issue that caused the old Gingerbread UI theme to show on new devices. The install process and settings are now themed to the preferred operating system look.

 BUG FIXES

  • Koshka’s Yummy Catnip Frenzy won’t trigger .1 seconds earlier than expected, which made it harder to Reflex Block.
  • Blackfeather no longer lunges in place when targeting turrets.
  • Skye won’t permanently gain vision of Petal munions that she’d locked onto (even after the lock expired).
  • Fixed a bug where displacements sometimes cancelled abilities.
  • Fixed a bug where early-cancelling a basic attack before it fires could cause it to go on full cooldown.
  • Fixed a bug where you could attempt to stutter step again after attempting to attack too early.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause irregularities with hero respawns and teleports home.
  • Fixed a bug causing some players to see multiple identical guild tags in the Rewards ladder.
  • Deleted guilds will no longer mess up the Guilds section UI.

UI IMPROVEMENT

  • Tap on the nearest guild tag in your season Rewards ladder to see the guild’s full name.

KILL BOUNTIES

“Before 1.12, every kill you get would add 50 gold to your bounty, essentially giving 50 gold to the enemy team for each kill you achieve as long as they eventually kill you once.  This actually hurt the weaker team sometimes because the team ahead on gold could throw their lives away in order to steal jungle camps from losers. In 1.12, we are moving kill bounties to be based on team gold. This means that losing teams are incentivized to trade kills because trades yield more gold when you are behind on net worth. The typical gold differential in a one-sided match has the leading team with ~4000 more gold by around 15 minutes.” —SurpriseBirthday

  • Bounty from killing a hero is no longer adjusted on their kill/death streak. Instead, it is adjusted by the gold difference between two teams.
    • Old formula: ((45-210 for level 1-12) + 50 * (killstreak-1)) * (0.85 * deathstreak)
    • New formula: ((50-160 for level 1-12) + (gold_difference * 8% if gold_difference > 0)

VAIN CRYSTAL BARRIER

Barrier was unnecessary given that it already regenerates. This will also reintroduce the fun and drama of backdoor Vain attempts.

  • Vain crystal no longer has a barrier.

header_hero_balance_changes_new

ardanARDAN

“Now that roam heroes have more gold, Ardan’s late-game health scaling on Vanguard is extremely strong. Also, we want enemies to sometimes consider walking through the Gauntlet. Ardan can build crystal to make the wall much more punishing.” —SurpriseBirthday

vanguardVANGUARD

  • Vanguard health ratio down from 50% to 35%

gauntletGAUNTLET

  • Gauntlet damage changed from 350-500-650 + 100%CP to 250-375-500 + 250%CP
  • Stun duration down from 1.5 to 1.2

Blackfeather_CBLACKFEATHER

“Basic attacking on Blackfeather should feel much more fluid now. Yay!” —Zekent

  • Fixed an issue with Blackfeather’s base attack speed.

 fortressFORTRESS

“Truth of the Tooth allowed Fortress to have too much burst potential without building damage. We’re tuning it down a bit so that he isn’t quite as punishing.” —Zekent

truth-of-the-toothTRUTH OF THE TOOTH

  • Truth of the Tooth damage down from 100-160-220-280-400 to 60-120-180-240-360

jouleJOULE

“Crystal Joule, while powerful, has some massive cooldowns in the late game. This change should allow her to be a bit more ready for engagements while still requiring her to put some thought into where and when she decides to zap her enemies.” —Zekent

JouleCBIG RED BUTTON

  • Big Red Button cooldown lowered from 120/105/90 to 100/85/70

“Koshka’s early ability spamming lacked a drawback. Her early-game aggression has been slowed without compromising her later in the game.” —AdyEndrus

  • Fixed a bug where the stun was applied early.

krulKRUL

“Krul’s stacking lifesteal mechanic sometimes became insurmountable when ahead, but became useless if he fell behind early. By smoothing out the lifesteal scaling we were able to find a nice medium to sand down both extremes of how Krul performs.” —SurpriseBirthday

  • Lifesteal per stack of Spectral Smite changed from 5-7-9-11-17% to 10-10-10-10-12%

LiberationX Crowned North America Autumn Champs!

Watch the NA Autumn Live Finals rebroadcast here.

LiberationX considers themselves a family of players. It took all six of them to take home the North America Autumn title.

LBX defeated Nemesis Hydra in a decisive fifth match in their best-of-five final, completing the reverse sweep and using the last of a multitude of roster variations required to finish the task.

trophies
ttigers, Statusbaked & Martohhh (from left) pulled off the reverse sweep in the best-of-five final series.

The team began with qualifier backups Exhail (laner) and Martohhh (roamer) starting in the Live Finals as they attempted to make it to Day 3, when superstar laner ttigers could join the team after taking the SATs. Along the way, LiberationX experimented with Chicken123 and swapping tournament MVP Statusbaked between lane and jungle, but it was ultimately the outstanding play of Exhail in lane that bought Statusbaked enough breathing room — and LiberationX enough time — to make it through the bottom half of the bracket and into the semifinals. There ttigers, arguably the No. 1 laner in North America, joined the team, allowing them to revert to the VGL qualifier roster lineup of Statusbaked, ttigers and DawnEclypse that steamrolled through the VGL bracket.

In the Grand Finals, LiberationX found themselves down 2-0 after an otherworldly display of talent from Nemesis Hydra roamer LostBoyToph and a surprise Hardek Petal pick to fend off LBX’s hyper-aggression. LiberationX went to the bench one final time for Match 3, swapping DawnEclypse for Martohhh, in response to Nemesis’ draft targeting of Dawn’s comfort pick, Ardan. That proved the final puzzle piece as LBX built momentum from there, winning three straight, including a blind pick finale where they secured their ultimate jungle aggression comp of Fortress, Koshka and Ringo. Throughout, ttigers showed superior positioning, especially on Skye, living up to the hype under tremendous “semifinals savior” pressure.

It was a finals for the ages, even exceeding the high drama of these teams’ group stage encounter, when LiberationX won a base race after being one basic attack away from defeat.

We can only hope the Europe Autumn Live Finals starting this Friday mirrors the intensity, excitement and match quality in Santa Ana, California.

EA Superstar Druid Joins Invincible Armada for VIPL

  • Vainglory

  • Dec 01, 2015

6x2_INV_druid

In the biggest player transfer of the VIPL offseason, druid has moved to Korea’s Invincible Armada and will start in lane when VIPL play begins this Thursday.

Druid is the #1-ranked player in the East Asia region. More importantly, the gap between druid and the #2 player is three times greater than the average distance between first- and second-place players in any other Vainglory region. He is a transcendent player, and his addition to INV’s roster raises that team’s talent and prospects immensely.

Druid’s competitive level in VIPL is world class, boasting the highest KDA (7.16) up to the semifinal round. Because druid plays lane carry, this allows the skilled jungle duo of Ruin and Wine to stay intact, building on the stable foundation created in past regional and international tournaments.

Invincible Armada has been considered a competitive giant since their impressive semifinals run in the most-recent VIPL and their championship finish at the earlier Vainglory World Invitational, defeating GankStars Sirius in the finals.

VIPL MATCHUP #1: INVINCIBLE ARMADA (KOREA) VS INFAMOUS (SEA)

With their improved roster, Invincible Armada will immediately be put to the test as they face Southeast Asia representative INFAMOUS in the group stage match on Thursday. Invincible Armada and INFAMOUS both competed in the Vainglory World Invitationals, and this will likely be druid’s greatest challenge of the group stage.

IN LANE: DRUID VS CASSANDRA

Druid will likely go head-to-head against INFAMOUS’ Cassandra, an elite player with World Invitational experience who is widely considered one of the best laners in SEA region. If druid somehow dominates this lane matchup, it will spell massive trouble for all INV’s opponents that follow.

TEAM INFAMOUS HIGHLIGHT VIDEO

The VIPL starts this Thursday at 2AM PST / 11AM CET / 7PM KST on OGN Global’s Twitch channel. Tune in to see druid shaping the future of the Invincible Armada franchise!

North America Autumn Live Finals Preview

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Nov 30, 2015

For the top eight teams competing in North America, it all comes down to this. The NA Autumn Live Finals begin on Friday, Dec. 4 at 3PM PST to determine the region’s champion.

This is the culmination of months of VGL qualification play across two massive tournaments to determine which teams made the cut and how they’d be seeded. The field features juggernaut newer teams such as VON and LiberationX alongside longtime favorites like GankStars and Nemesis. Let’s take a look at each contender …

MEET THE TEAMS

Eight teams qualified to compete live on the grand stage at the Santa Ana eSports Arena. Each of the eight teams is listed below, sorted by its seed for this tournament.

VON

(1) VON Menace

The Cinderella story of the first VGL qualifier became the top seed and team to beat in the second qualifier. The only problem: No one could beat them. In fact, VON Menace only dropped a single match across the entirety of the 64-team bracket tournament, securing the No. 1 seed at the Autumn Live Finals. This team of Chinese players living in America go into the Autumn Finals as the clear favorites, but there are multiple teams capable of knocking them off if they can find a way to match VON’s level of play.

  • Autumn Finals roster: LoveIce4ever, VONC (captain), PhoenIx
  • One2Watch4: VONC
  • They win if … they continue to flow effortlessly around the map as a three-man unit, seemingly always one step (and one level) ahead of the enemy and with incredible postioning.
  • They lose if … opponents can hold map vision, preventing three-man rotations by always gaining the upper hand in jungle clearing. Otherwise, they’ll only lose if they run into a comp or tactic that breaks them out of their perfected hive mind and causes confusion or disorganization. This has only happened once (against Ardent Alliance in the Preseason Qualifier finals), and VON instantly learned from that mistake.

 Nemesis(2) Nemesis Hydra

Nemesis defeated arch-rival GankStars 2-1 in both VGL qualifiers, intensifying an already fierce longtime feud. Despite falling to VON, Nemesis Hydra overcame multiple challenges and adversity throughout the tourneys and distinguished itself as a dangerous team that performs under pressure. But … Nemesis star jungler iLoveJoseph is not traveling to the live event in California. This will allow Koedz and hardek (both phenomenal players) to return to their natural positions in lane and jungle, respectively, but they lose the punch of one of the region’s nastiest junglers. On the flipside, Hydra’s hero pool is actually much larger with their present player lineup.

  • Autumn Finals roster: Koedz, hardek (captain), LostBoyToph, Stussy
  • One2Watch: hardek
  • They win if … their jungle pair is able to make plays and lessen the pressure from lane.
  • They lose if … they make early-game mistakes and their early aggression fails to pay off. Since they usually pick early jungle comps, they cannot make any mistakes in the first few levels. Losing jungle pressure and vision will take a toll on the whole team.

Gankstars logo(3) Gankstars Vega

GankStars is one of the most competitive Vainglory organizations in the world and is now paying all their players with pro contracts. GankStars Sirius won the most recent VIPL, and GankStars Vega is looking to follow in their footsteps by overcoming the top teams on the grand stage and besting their qualifier performances. GankStars Vega is the only team in the field with a prior history of live tournament play, as this exact roster played as Team Fusion in the Vainglory World Invitational on OGN television in Korea.

  • Autumn Finals roster: FooJee (captain), Oldskool, R3cKeD
  • One2Watch: Oldskool
  • They win if … they are able to stay focused and perform to their ability. Gaining an upper hand in drafts and making smart plays throughout (while minimizing mistakes) will be critical.
  • They lose if … their team-wide rotations are too predictable, giving preemptive teams the one-step head start to gain better outcomes.

Liberation(4) Liberation X

LiberationX is a matchup nightmare because of the individual talent of Statusbaked. As the No. 1 player on the NA leaderboard, his personal ability is something only a dedicated, cohesive team can contain. LBX ran over all comers in the Autumn VGL qualifier until slamming into immovable object VON. With teammates also holding top spots on the leaderboards, LiberationX will be well equipped to exact vengeance on Menace and the rest of the field.

  • Autumn Finals roster: DawnEclypse, Chicken123, Statusbaked (captain), martohhh, exhail, Ttigers*
  • One2Watch: Statusbaked
  • They win if … they can draft a comp that complements their strengths: either early lane or early jungle. By focusing and making smart plays, these guys can definitely take it all the way.
  • They lose if … over-aggression is the evil temptation for these players. Falling into this trap is likely the only way they can lose, as many teams are smart enough to capitalize from such mistakes.
  • Special win condition: ttigers, arguably the best laner in North America, was unable to attend this tourney from the outset because he has to take the SATs on Saturday! It’s a tough break for him, but there’s a chance that if LiberationX makes it to the semifinals that he could hop on a flight and make it just in time. Should ttigers swoop in for the final few matches, it will be much more than an emotional lift. This is a player capable of dominating lane every game and tilting matches by himself.

tas(5) Frame Perfect (TAS eSports)

Frame Perfect is one of only two teams to make it to the Autumn Finals despite not being seeded in the top 8 of the qualifiers. Frame Perfect’s experience and leadership proved to be a potent combination, punching their ticket for California. Frame Perfect’s success is inexorably linked to the performance of team captain (and fake hero enthusiast) corpus.

  • Autumn Finals roster: Corpus (captain), AI3X, ITI, skipper587
  • One2Watch: Corpus
  • They win if … they orchestrate a draft comp that suits their passive play. They can continue to achieve by preventing jungle aggression and capitalizing on any mistakes.
  • They lose if … the enemy team breaks through its defenses and pressures the jungle. Forcing Frame Perfect to lose gold stability and play from behind will be its ultimate test.

 ArdentAxiom(6) Ardent Axiom

Ardent Axiom boasts one of the most cerebral teams in the field, which is generally an Ardent hallmark. Axiom was a controversial 4-seed in the Autumn VGL Qualifier but silenced those critics by knocking off a very dangerous Chubby Bunnies team 2-1. Ultimately, Axiom was steamrolled by LiberationX, joining a large group of victims.

  • Autumn Finals roster: Jajajack, wailmer (captain), Prayse
  • One2Watch:
  • They win if … they pick a strong jungle comp, which will help them hold the pace of the game by playing to their strengths.
  • They lose if … the enemy applies early-game pressure and successfully snowballs the match. Playing from behind will prove a challenging test against all these top teams.

scorpion(7) Vertigo Black

Vertigo Black had the spectators speechless when they stole the first game of their series against VON Menace in the VGL quarterfinals. BestChuckNA’s scaling on Skaarf was ludicrous as Vertigo Black handed VON their only loss of the tournament. Expect big performances out of BestChuckNA as Vertigo Black fights its way through from the 7th seed.

  • Autumn Finals roster: xBEOWULF11x (captain), JoshOnVertigo, RiiKzZ, BestChuckNA
  • One2Watch: BestChuckNA
  • They win if … they continue to play with that same synergy displayed during qualifiers. While their positioning is excellent, it’s now time to see individual mechanics soar.
  • They lose if … they are not able to match the rotation times of their opponents. Getting out-manned will cause devastating results.

Nemesis(8) Nemesis Titan

The only organization sending two teams to the Autumn Live Finals, Nemesis Titan will need to rise above the in-house competition and set their sights on the larger stage where higher-seeded teams await. They conquered Team Snipe in the VGL, but can they beat the best of the best at the Autumn Live Finals?

  • Autumn Finals roster: LovingEman (captain), Inane, DragonDagger
  • One2Watch:
  • They win if … they gain the upper hand during picks & bans since they have a large hero pool.
  • They lose if … they play too passively while not using their comps scaling to their advantage.

The tournament follows a double elimination format. Each round of matches is a best-of-three series. The final will be best-of-five.

VIPL Random Drawing Reveals Clear ‘Group of Death’

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Dec 01, 2015

OGN and the VIPL announced their randomly selected team groupings today, which resulted in a heavily stacked Group of Death.

Through this lottery-system group assignment, Group B of this season’s VIPL looks like this:

  • Hunters
  • G2.Kinguin (G2 eSports)
  • SK Gaming
  • Ardent Alliance

Welcome to the Group of Death. Yes, this one group features both VGL European Qualifier champions (G2 eSports & SK Gaming), the VGL NA Preseason Qualifier champion (Ardent Alliance) and the #2 team in the world based on past VIPL performance (Hunters, representing China).

With only one team guaranteed to make it on to the semifinals from each group, the task of advancing for any of these teams just became immensely more difficult. In a system where each game can translate into lasting effects on the future of a team, expect to see some extremely serious and high-stakes games from Group B.

GROUP A

  • GankStars
  • PHOBIA
  • WILD
  • DMG

The reigning champions of VIPL stand out very quickly in this group and we expect to see great things from the defending champion GankStars. PHOBIA are in a special situation because last season they were matched in the same group as GankStars as well.

GankStars and Hunters have competed in elimination matches with one each other, twice. With DMG picking up Hunters’ starting lane carry from last season, Godfather gets another opportunity to knock GankStars out of competition.

WILD are no strangers to the VIPL, falling just short of qualifying for last season’s wildcard matches.

GROUP C

  • Invincible Armada
  • INFAMOUS
  • WEV
  • UniversalCivils

Invincible Armada won the very first OGN event and has been proudly representing Korea since. While Group C must be considered Invincible Armada’s to lose, they cannot afford to look past the very strong, very dangerous representative from Southeast Asia region: INFAMOUS. With INV’s high profile, it’s probable that the other teams have done their research and are prepared to try to take them down. The rest of their group may not have the same global experience, but each team qualified in their respective regions and will be worthy opposition.

Each time that VIPL plays these matches live, they break it down into one game from each group. That means that each stream will include two of these teams combating. Last season there were two three-way ties heading into the finals games of each group.

The tournament starts on Thursday, Dec 3 at 2 AM PST. Tune in to OGN Global’s Twitch channel to watch live!

Free Hero Rotation (Nov. 24): Rona, Adagio, Koshka & More!

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Nov 24, 2015

6x2_20151124

In this week’s free hero rotation, play heroes who rose to prominence in 1.10 tournament play and are now thriving in 1.11. In the huge VGL Qualifiers, Rona leapt into favor with many players after her true weapon carry strength was showcased by LiberationX. When paired with a crystal carry Adagio, Rona becomes a freight train looking for squishy heroes to flatten. Rona has been conceptualized recently as not just a jungle carry, but as a strategy, building entire compositions around keeping the Rona train moving. Plus, Koshka is back, Ringo is ruling early-game comps and weapon Joule is still tearing through targets late. Try them all yourself now!

RONA (JUNGLE/WARRIOR)

Rona is a deadly berserker who is always ready to leap into battle. She holds her own in melee combat, unleashing enormous damage on everyone who stands and fights. Rona is most often played in the jungle, pairs well with protectors and works well with both weapon and crystal builds.

ADAGIO (ROAM/PROTECTOR)

The master manipulator of large-scale battles, Adagio brings incredible teamfight presence with huge area-of-effect damage and team-saving abilities. He almost seems too good: He can heal. He can amplify damage. He can stun and nuke the entire enemy team … but none of these can be achieved easily without team-wide coordination. Adagio is extremely flexible and can start as laner, jungler or roamer.

KOSHKA (JUNGLE/ASSASSIN)

Koshka is an in-your-face assassin adept at getting the kill and then getting out. She should focus on assassinating weak targets and locking down the most lethal enemy. She is extremely fast at clearing jungle camps, making her an ideal jungler. Confident players will even invade the enemy-side jungle for fun and profit.

RINGO (LANE/SNIPER)

Ringo is often played as the primary damage dealer for his team. He can shoot at blinding speeds and finish off fleeing enemies with an epic fireball that follows foes across the battlefield. Incredibly weak in the early game, Ringo players should focus on earning as much gold as possible in the lane before picking big fights.

SKAARF (LANE/MAGE)

Skaarf is a cute little flamethrower who thrives at dealing long-range and area-of-effect damage, especially during teamfights. However, his abilities are aimed, meaning you’ll need quick reflexes and good prediction to land those fireballs. Skaarf is often in lane but can also be effectively played out of the jungle. Go burn your way to glory!

JOULE (JUNGLE/WARRIOR)

Joule is a hardened front-line fighter with built-in defensive plating. Joule’s abilities require proper aim to hit the target, but they have a devastating effect if you can aim properly.

ABOUT THE FREE HERO ROTATION

The free hero rotation unlocks six heroes each week to play as long and as much as you want in the Casual queue. It’s an opportunity to test drive heroes before using ICE or Glory to unlock them.

The free rotation changes every Tuesday and heroes in the rotation usually won’t return for a few weeks or months afterward, so unlocking heroes is always worthwhile. The free rotation does not apply to Ranked play to ensure players are already very familiar with the heroes they play in that try-hard environment with skill tiers at stake.

Hero Sneak Peek: Stormguard Archer Kestrel

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Nov 21, 2015

Kestrel_splash_art

At any given time, there are multiple Vainglory heroes in various stages of development. Today, we take a look at Vainglory’s next hero: the archer Kestrel. This is the second hero introduced from the elite fighting force called the Stormguard, with Catherine famously being the first. Kestrel is still in testing and anything or everything could change before her release.

KESTREL ABILITIES (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Kestrel is still in development. During this process, abilities may change slightly — or change dramatically — depending on what the designers learn through the testing process.

ADRENALINE (HEROIC PERK)
Kestrel gains increased attack speed and decreased energy costs on her abilities each time she lands a basic attack. This stacks several times times and falls off rapidly if she stops landing attacks.

HALCYON ARROWS (A)
Kestrel fires a skillshot arrow. This impacts the first target in a line, dealing weapon and crystal damage and applying on-hit effects. Kestrel keeps several Halcyon Arrows in reserve for successive shots.

ACTIVE CAMOUFLAGE (B)
Kestrel briefly becomes invisible and gains bonus move speed.
She also leaves behind a mist invisible to enemies at the location where she activates stealth. If an enemy moves into this mist and Kestrel lands an attack or ability on them, the mist will detonate, briefly stunning and dealing crystal damage to all enemies within it.

STORM SNIPE (Global Ultimate)
After preparing her shot with an energy scope, Kestrel releases an arrow that instantly pierces across the Fold. This deals both weapon and crystal damage to heroes and objectives along its path. The cooldown for this ability is greatly reduced if it lands on an enemy within a mist trap.

HERO DESIGNER CIDERHELM INTRODUCES KESTREL

ciderhelm
Hero designer Ciderhelm

“With Kestrel, our goal is to deliver on two fantasies: When playing weapon, you’ll become a predator, staying near your targets and using brief bursts of stealth to weave through combat as you line up your arrows. Crystal Kestrel benefits from longer stealth durations, allowing her to lean more heavily into her traps as she sets up long-range sniper shots.”

Kestrel is coming next to Vainglory. Again, all abilities are subject to change based on the testing process.
