SHOW OFF & RANK UP

Each Vainglory season is a fresh challenge with new dynamics. Resetting players’ rank gives all players a chance to advance every season and show their true skill in an ever-evolving meta. And this season, we’re granting all players bonus progress on their Autumn rank based on prior Ranked performance for a head start.

By displaying last season’s rank to allies only on the match loading screen, players can take pride in showing off their latest milestone accomplishment, without worrying about the midseason stress of displaying a rank that’s moving up and down. A seasonal-best rank is a symbol you’ve earned of your hard work and exceptional play — and it can serve as something aspirational to surpass in your current season. Aim to beat that rank number, and make Autumn your biggest accomplishment yet!

  • Your Summer rank is now immortalized in your profile’s Trophy Case.
  • See your best Summer rank along with your allies’ on the Ranked match loading screen.
  • Your rank will be reset for the start of Autumn, along with bonus progress based on past performance. Rank up for a fresh challenge.

NEW ITEMS!

bottom_bracket

SPELLSWORD

“Spellsword fills two holes we have had in our game for a long time: First, weapon carries never really had a decent item they could purchase if they consumed energy at a faster rate. Nor did they have any item they could purchase really to provide cooldown. And in replacing Halcyon Potions with Healing Flask, we’re hitting energy options for some weapon builds particularly hard. Spellsword will address these needs while still maintaining the identity of a weapon carry.

“Secondly, when the game was originally released, there was a very distinct split between abilities that did crystal damage and basic attacks that did weapon damage. We have since broken that mold by introducing more ability-oriented heroes — weapon casters, if you may. This item is a perfect fit for many of those heroes while also creating some interesting choices for other weapon heroes who are willing to trade the damage for utility.” —Nivmett

  • Passive: Basic attacks grant you 3 energy (9 on heroes)
  • Builds out of Six Sins and Chronograph
  • 90 Weapon Power
  • 35% Cooldown Speed
  • 2.5 Energy Recharge
  • Purchase for 2600 gold; sells for 1300

HEALING FLASK

“We’re removing Halcyon Potions and replacing them with a new item, Healing Flask, which blocks incoming damage and recovers a significant portion of your health and energy. Our goal with this item is to provide players more impactful and obvious decision points with healing. Healing Flask will have an impact on lane dynamics, itemization strategy and skirmishing.” —Ciderhelm

  • Activate: Block 115-500 damage (based on hero level) and recover 30% health and energy over the next 5 seconds. (120 second cooldown)
  • Sells for 0 gold, can be repurchased for 300 gold
  • Automatically in inventory upon start of Standard matches

BATTLE READINESS:
MORE DANGER. EXPLOSIVE ACTION.

bottom_bracket

Great gameplay comes from making meaningful decisions and managing risk. And in a MOBA, most risk/reward scenarios revolve around heroes’ health. Can you secure that kill under enemy turret and live to tell the tale? Can you time your Fountain perfectly to turn the tide of the fight?  Can you 1v2 and become a legend?

But one of the most delicious areas of risk is around jungle “battle readiness.” It’s the constant dance between clearing camps and earning max gold vs being ready for the next fight happening any moment. Battle readiness has been a major factor in designing Vainglory’s new 5v5 map — especially the layout and function of the 5v5 jungle — but those deliberations helped us realize that battle readiness was a big opportunity for Halcyon Fold 3v3 as well. Simply put, most fights to date happen at full health, and that removes a major teamfight dimension.

So, for Autumn season, we’re blowing up the stale meta and introducing an entirely new way to think about jungle engagements:

Potions … gone.

Book & Barbed Needle healing … slashed.

Healing cooldowns … intensified.

The result is a jungle fraught with more danger, more explosive action — and much more interesting decision points. The tradeoff between gold efficiency and battle readiness will definitely take some getting used to. You can no longer clear every camp and expect to live through an ambush. “Fight or farm?” will become the question on players’ minds. And once you realize the windows of opportunity this meta change creates, there’s a world of strategies you’ll want to try. When combined with two new items in the mix, Autumn season is going to be a wild ride …

PLAYER EXPERIENCE IMPROVEMENTS

bottom_bracket

A new season gives us a chance to level up parts of the player experience that deserve more attention, like the steps players must take to navigate through their skin and talent collections.

NEW HERO BROWSER

  • Browse all skins in one convenient location
  • Jump to a hero by letter
  • Easily craft and buy hero skins

TALENT BROWSER

  • Browse all talents in one place
  • Jump to a hero by letter to view their talents
  • Easily inspect and upgrade talents

TALENT UPGRADES

  • The green talent upgrade indicators now clear after you’ve seen them
  • Green upgrade frame remains for any talents you can afford to upgrade

MATCH LOADING SCREEN

  • Your Ranked skill tier for the previous completed season (in this case Summer) will appear on the Ranked match loading screen.
  • Your final Summer Blitz Score (to the nearest 100) will appear on the Blitz match loading screen.
  • These tier numbers are visible to you and your allies.

RANKED PARTY RESTRICTION

“One common source of player frustration is wondering why they were matched with players way above or below their skill tier. Often, this happened because a party had a dramatic skill tier disparity between players, causing the other team to be match-made similarly. While it’s understandable that a highly skilled player might mentor someone newer to the game, the wide range of possible outcomes was giving players whiplash. So, we’ve instituted a ‘1-tier’ rule to better ensure players in ranked matches will be similarly skilled.” —PlayoffBeard

  • You can no longer enter Ranked queue as a party if your total skill tier is greater than 1 tier apart. For example, Simply Amazing (Tier 8) Silver can, at most, party with Pinnacle of Awesome (Tier 9) Silver or The Hotness (Tier 7) Silver.

‘TODAY’S TALENTS’ MARKET

  • The daily ‘Pick 3’ now rotates every 12 hours! Be sure to stop back with the selection of talents changes.

WIN COUNTERS

“Want to see how you’ve performed in Blitz, Battle Royale, Ranked and more? Now you can track every win and notch those Ws. Some players will see larger-than-expected win counts because we were counting bot matches for a time. We’re not anymore.” —PlayoffBeard

  • See your overall win count for each game mode

REDUCING TOXICITY: LOW PRIORITY QUEUE

“The Low Priority Queue is supposed to be a deterrent sufficient to alter bad player behavior. But offending players would often just “kill time” or ignore LPQ by using secondary player accounts. By disabling logout during LPQ, it forces players to sit in the penalty box and play their way back into the game’s good graces. We’ll monitor this closely to see if it’s effective in reducing player toxicity.” —PlayoffBeard

  • Players in Low Priority Queue for bad behavior cannot log out of their account to play on a smurf until the LPQ timer expires

TUTORIAL IMPROVEMENTS

  • Removed blocking modals
  • Changed the second tutorial to 1v1 instead of 3v3
  • Added English voiceover instructions
  • Note: Voiceover instructions for other languages will come in future updates

ANDROID KEYBOARD & MOUSE SUPPORT

bottom_bracket

Autumn season introduces Vainglory keyboard & mouse support on select Android platforms, including the Samsung DeX Station. That’s right, you’ll be able to play with the classic QWER ability key bindings and numeric item activations.

When we unveiled this news at gamescom in August, some players expressed fears that it signaled a move away from mobile or touchscreen controls — or that it could provide keyboard players with an unfair advantage.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

First, Vainglory is a mobile game built for the touchscreen generation of players. Mobile gaming is rapidly growing, and it’s absolutely the place we want to be. We have no plans for general release on PC or Mac. Second, devs such as Ciderhelm and Zekent have been playing Vainglory for years with a mouse and keyboard during internal playtesting. Zekent was a MOBA pro and many of us in the Lair come from PC gaming backgrounds. Our conclusion from playing with keyboard & mouse is that there is no advantage over touchscreen controls — and that some things such as stutter stepping are more natural through the tap interface. There are no specific keyboard & mouse optimizations beyond the QWER keys and number keys for items. But partnering with hardware makers lets us demonstrate the power of our E.V.I.L. game engine and get the word out about Vainglory, which is really helpful in growing the game.

We will, of course, be monitoring usage very closely, and if we see anything unintended, we’ll immediately address it. So, don’t fret … and if you’re curious, check out the new keyboard & mouse support! —PlayoffBeard

  • Optimized for keyboard & mouse play on Android operating systems
  • Uses QWER ability keys & numeric item activations

Some players experienced very unfortunate and frustrating “freeze” issues in matches during Update 2.7. Many of these issues were addressed with a hotfix during the 2.7 cycle, and the rest of the issues should be resolved in this Autumn season (2.8) update.

For context, the root cause of these issues was that we’re optimizing our game engine to make play smoother on 3v3 and to make sure we’re ready for a smooth 5v5 play experience on low-end mobile devices. Unfortunately, these kinds of tech changes sometimes introduce bugs.

We’ve done everything we can to ensure that in Autumn season, players can focus on fun, not freezes or other pain.  Thanks for your patience.

  • Resolved: “freeze” bug

  • BUG FIXES

  • Grumpjaw will no longer instantaneously attack twice after activating Hangry.
  • Fixed a bug where stealthed enemy heroes could be detected by the change in allied nameplates
  • Fixed a bug where Petal would occasionally permanently lose her munions
  • Recalling now stops Skye’s forward barrage and also breaks the lock from Suri Strike
  • Rapidly moving back and forth while locked on as Skye no longer occasionally causes her position to get out of sync between the client and server.
  • Catherine’s Stormguard damage ticks now have their damage calculated each tick, rather than all up front. This means upgrading the ability or buying an item in the middle of it being active will make the remaining ticks do more damage.
  • Fixed a bug where the Sanctuary platform speed boost would not instantly refresh
  • Addressed a reported “black screen” issue. Note: If you experience this in Update 2.8, please tell us immediately. If the issue persists for any players, we will immediately investigate and remedy.

  • The seasons turn ushering in Autumn on Sept. 6. Get ready for wild action the likes of which players haven’t seen since Update 1.11!

ALTERNATE FATE LORE

The Lost Temple of Ra

After seven nights on camelback, the Horus King of the Great House found nothing at the site of the Temple of Ra but endless green, pink and blue sand dunes whirling in the wind. The disciples who had accompanied him consulted the star charts, but they were not lost. Still, the temple was nowhere to be found.

“The temple has been lifted from the world,” surmised a disciple.

“The temple has been made invisible,” argued another.

“Ra has abandoned us,” wailed another. “Now the Churn will end us all!”

The disciples gathered in a circle and sang hymns. They consulted the old scrolls. They hypnotized one another and beseeched Ra to speak through their mouths. They argued until dawn, but the temple remained lost.

The Horus King watched without speaking, and so only he noticed the boy acolyte who, bored by the proceedings, dug in the sand and found the crystal jewel. The jewel grew and grew as the boy dug, widening from its sharp point.

“Behold,” the king announced to the disciples, “the tip of an obelisk.”

“The Temple of Ra is buried,” gasped a disciple.

“This is why the Glass City has suffered,” surmised another. “Ra is trapped beneath the sands.”

“Then we must free him,” said the Horus King. “Dig to the entrance.”

For many days, the Disciples of Ra and the Horus King dug until a door to the Temple was found and cleared.

“Stay here, and do not allow the sands to bury the temple while I am inside,” said the Horus King.

“Beware the guardian, your majesty,” warned the boy acolyte.

The Horus King turned his impersonal glowing eyes onto the boy and nodded before lifting his torch and entering the dark temple alone.

Coming Soon: the Rare ‘Vaquero’ Ringo!

  • Vainglory

  • Aug 29, 2017

The famous Rowdy Ringo is known through the Wild West for tricky dice and robbery. Somehow, he never gets caught! Keep reading for more information about ‘Vaquero’ Ringo.

MODEL CHANGES

  • All new sombrero!
  • Charro suit pants with leather chaps and Grangor belt buckle
  • Black and gold patterned poncho
  • .50 caliber rimfire revolver
  • Woven wicker jug

ALTERNATE FATE LORE

The Hornswoggle

One late autumn, Rowdy Ringo surfaced in town after years away. We’d figured him for dead, limb removal injuries being the fatal kind, and those who hoped he was alive were sure he’d never show his face again. But he wandered into the tavern one day just as casual as you please, what he’d lost hidden up under his poncho, winking at the ladies like he wasn’t three-quarters of a man.

Took about thirty seconds for Rowdy Ringo to have three different gun barrels against his head.

“Whoa whoa whoa there, boys,” said Ringo, his one hand up nice and peaceful. “Your bullets are going to go straight through my skull and catch one another. Wouldn’t want you upstanding gentlemen to die over a dumb mistake like that.”

“Lemme take the shot,” whined Bookie Barry. “This man walked out on a hundred-gold debt.”

“I’m a vaquero now. Only thing I hustle are cattle,” said Ringo. “I’ll set you up with one of my good dairy cows; should be worth a hundred plus interest.”

“I should get ‘im,” said the Lawman Larry. “He’s been jailed for robbery three times and his friends always broke him out!”

“I never did stand trial in front of a jury of my peers,” said Ringo.

“Justice is mine, says me,” cried Reverend Ronald. “This man has committed the sin of drunkenness and, most important, he ran off with my daughter!”

“I don’t drink anymore. This is just agave juice,” said Ringo. He wiggled his elbow and his wicker jug sloshed. “And to be fair, reverend, your daughter ran off with me.”

For a few awkward seconds the gunmen eyed one another, then the bookie holstered his weapon. “I always wanted a cow,” he said.

“Barry’s a smart man,” said Ringo. “Anyone else want to be smart like him?”

“No,” said Lawman Larry.

“No,” said Reverend Ronald.

“Let’s be fair, then. Barry, you got a coin over there?”

“I ain’t giving you no –”

“No, Barry, I don’t want your coin. Focus, now, or you’re gonna make one of these two trigger fingers nervous. You got a coin?”

“Yeah I gotta coin,” said Barry, digging in his pockets.

“Alright now, here’s what you do: you flip that coin and catch it. If it lands heads-up, the lawman gets to shoot me. If it lands tails-up, the reverend gets the honor. That sound fair?”

The lawman and the reverend shifted their weight from foot to foot. “Feels like a hornswoggling,” muttered Larry.

“Nothing’s more fair than a coin flip,” urged Ringo.

“Alright,” said Larry.

“No funny business,” said Ronald.

All eyes turned to Barry’s shiny coin as it flipped through the air, so no one saw Ringo draw his .50 caliber rimfire revolver. They only heard the shots – BAM-BAM! and the sound of the lawman crumpling to the ground. The bookie scrambled for his gun while the gold coin hit the floor, a smoking hole through its center.

“Don’t be doing that,” said Ringo, pointing his weapon at the bookie.

Barry held up both hands with a manly pout. “But I want a cow,” he muttered.

“You’ll get your cow. I am a gentleman of my word,” said Ringo.

Barry smiled and backed off, mumbling something about cheese.

“Now you and I,” said Ringo, aiming at the reverend, “we are gonna come to an understanding. You’re gonna put your gun away and you’re gonna forgive your daughter for running off.”

“Hi Daddy!” A girl behind the bar waved with one hand as she scooped coins out of the cash register with the other. No one had seen her come in, what with the hullabaloo.

“I’m not gonna be able to sleep tonight if I don’t make a little peace here,” said Ringo, his aim true. “So go on; put that away and say you forgive her.”

Reverend Ronald shoved his piece back in its holster and grimaced at the sack full of cash jingling over his daughter’s shoulder.

“Evil setup you have going,” the reverend grumbled. “But of course I forgive her.”

“Thanks, Daddy.” The girl gave her father a peck on the cheek on her way out of the tavern. Ringo followed close behind, keeping his revolver leveled on the reverend.

“Isn’t this nice? All this familial tranquility. It warms my heart.” Ringo tipped his sombrero with the muzzle of his revolver and disappeared out the door.

The bookie stepped over the bleeding lawman and stuck his head out the door, purple with rage. “I want my cow, Ringo!” he yelled after the horses galloping away.

ALTERNATE FATE LORE

The Theft of the Wizard’s Brew

The roaring-est, meanest, and most frightening of all the forest creatures, the beheader of the Giant Spider, the King of the Forest, respected far and wide for his fearlessness and strength, the lion, had a terrible secret.

He was a coward.

At night he laid in his bed of silk and worried. There were so many problems in his kingdom. He’d defeated the Giant Spider, sure, but only because she’d been asleep at the time. There were trolls in the caves, and wolf packs, hungry bears and tricky foxes, not to mention wicked witches and those tiny gnats that bit him inside his ears. He couldn’t even nap in the sun without worry, for he was blind, and so might fall asleep in a field of poppies and be carried away by winged harpies. The raccoons and the squirrels came to him with their endless territorial disputes and his wise compromises satisfied neither group.

When anxieties set to whirling in his mind, the king would lap up a little of the wizard’s brew. The concoction tasted like fire and gave him courage.

One morning, the king awoke to the sharp scent of the wizard’s brew in his nose and wheezy snores in his ears. He shook out his mane and several fairies fell out of it. The fairies had found his brew and drank up every last drop. Made courageous by the brew, they had braided the king’s mane with ribbons while he slept, and kissed his nose, and lifted up his lips to poke at his teeth before falling asleep on and around him in his silk bed.

The king roared. “Look what you’ve done, you miserable bugs! How will I rule the kingdom now?”

The fairies startled awake and flew out of range of the lion’s swiping claws. With their tongues poked out, they flew away.

The king paced as the sun rose. In the glade, the crows and the woodpeckers would already be waiting for him to pass judgment on their longstanding noise complaints against one another. The lion heard his heart beating fast in his ears. The creatures of the forest would all find out his terrible secret if he didn’t find a quick solution.

Shaking the ribbons out of his mane, the lion grabbed his lion-headed axe. He had only one friend who could help him: the King of the City of Emeralds. Off he stalked toward the city, ignoring the birdy squabbling behind him.

BLITZ CHANGES

BLITZ

Blitz continues to evolve as we observe how people play and consider player feedback. This update, we focused on pushing players out of the lane and back into the jungle by making turrets harder to kill. We also beefed up the sentries to prevent a sneaky sentry camp strat that was creating a frustrating experience for players.

  • Middle Sentry is no longer visible without vision
  • 25 second respawn time added to the sentries
  • Turret health increased

  • Tap-and-Hold Scoreboard added
  • Turn on this feature by checking the box in the Scoreboard screen itself. (After selecting this once, the game will remember your preference.)

BUG FIXES & IMPROVEMENTS

bottom_bracket

QUALITY OF LIFE & PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS

  • Fixed a major frame rate issue impacting all BRAWL game modes
  • Modified chat configurations to improve stability and added in significantly more chat instrumentation so that we can better identify, track, isolate and resolve any ongoing or future chat issues.
  • Step-change improvement in Match Accept stability
  • Made animations more efficient.
  • Reduced network traffic.
  • Reduced memory usage.

LATENCY IMPROVEMENTS

Through the use of new local servers, we’re improving latency in hotspots all over the world. These infrastructure improvements are now positively impacting 34% of players globally. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Southeast Asia has experienced a 35% decrease in the number of lag spikes.
  • In Australia, lag spikes were reduced by 15%.
  • In Indonesia, we reduced average ping by 11% and improved ping consistency by 62% (meaning far fewer wild fluctuations in ping), with lag spikes reduced by 13%.
  • In the Philippines, we reduced average ping by 6% and improved consistency by 32%, with lag spikes reduced by 24%.
  • In India, we improved consistency by 20% and reduced lag spikes by 8%.
  • In Cambodia, we reduced average ping by 19% and improved consistency by 32%, with lag spikes reduced by 55%.
  • In Thailand, we reduced average ping by 8% and improved consistency by 35%, with lag spikes reduced by 23%.
  • In Korea, we dropped the average ping by 15% from 72 milliseconds to 61ms, and we reduced ping fluctuations by 48%, with lag spikes reduced by 10%.
  • In North America, we reduced lag spikes by 10%.
  • In Europe, we reduced lag spikes by 4%.

The bottom line is the tech improvements we’ve been testing are working, so we’ll leverage these learnings to continue to improve ping and stability for players everywhere. —PlayoffBeard

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed an issue that caused Samuel’s Malice & Verdict to not do damage and not show the particle effect (but was showing the animation and going on cooldown).
  • Fixed a bug where Grumpjaw was able to instantaneously attack twice after activating Hangry.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Gwen’s Skedaddle to not block Grumpjaw’s Grumpy skill.
  • Fixed a bug where stealthed enemy heroes could be detected erroneously.
  • Fixed a bug where Petal would occasionally lose her munions permanently.
  • Recalling now stops Skye’s forward barrage and also breaks the lock from Suri Strike.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed Skye to quickly return to battle by regenerating with Suri Strike.
  • Rapidly moving back and forth while locked on as Skye no longer occasionally causes her position to get out of sync with the server.
  • Fixed a typo on Skye’s Target Lock so it properly indicates her extra 10% bonus damage when locked on.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Idris to be locked onto the ground if stunned just before using his Shimmer Strike.
  • Stopped Grace from latching onto recalling enemies.
  • Modified the Recall sound to be on the same cooldown as any other spammable sound so that it can only be heard the first time it is used rather than every time someone uses it.
  • Fixed a visual issue that caused Reflex Block’s particle effects to last longer than it should (no change to the Reflex Block length or how it works).
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the wrong trophies to show when looking at other guilds.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause the UI in guilds to go all wonky (technical term) when promoting/demoting/removing members.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed Team leaders to start queue for next match even if other members were still looking at end-game results screen.

TALENTS BUG FIXES

  • Fixed a bug that caused Rona’s MOAR Rage talent to provide double the weapon power bonuses.
  • Fixed a bug where Grumpjaw’s Rampage talent was doing damage to things he walked over after using his Grumpy skill instead of during his Grumpy skill’s charge.
  • Fixed an issue that could in rare instances cause a player’s talent to change mid-match.
  • Fixed a text discrepancy on Kestrel’s Active Reload talent. It should now properly show base numbers of Damage 70% and Energy 40%.
  • Fixed Phinn’s Phaster Talent text to more accurately reflect what it does.

That’s a wrap!

CHECK HER OUT IN GAME:

ALTERNATE FATE LORE

The Valkyrie and The Berserker

Red mist covered the muted sun of the Netherworld, and the valkyries in their feasting glade turned their noses up to inhale the smell of nearby fire and blood.

“War,” said one, the eldest, called Grace.

“War,” said the others.

Cheers erupted from the dead warriors at the long table. As the valkyries mounted their horses, the warriors wagered on who would return, hoping for their own relatives and friends.

With her great war hammer lifted, Grace led her sisters to the magic hedge closest to the battle. The sisters sang to open the barrier between worlds, a trick only valkyries know, and leapt over the hedge to the living world, where the sun beat down on the hillside littered with the dead. The valkyries dispersed among the victims, galloping, dreamlike. Some of the delirious dying thought they saw winged angels; some saw armored warriors and some saw barefoot maidens. Well-fed crows scattered to the trees as the valkyries made their choices.

Grace passed by those crying for mercy, for death, for the glade or for their mothers. She left behind a dozen warriors with lightning and shadow-burnt sword wounds until she found the fighter who had felled them. The berserker laid face-down, her hair soaked red with the blood of her enemies, swords still in her fists, an axe buried in her shoulder.

Into the mud Grace dropped. With one sharp tug she freed the axe from the berserker’s scapula. The warrior’s groan bubbled in the mud and blood pulsed from the wound. “Not dead then,” murmured the valkyrie, “but not far from it.” She settled on the ground to accompany the berserker into death.

“Hail, Warrior,” she said. “Tonight, you feast in the glade.”

“Rather not,” mumbled the berserker. She rolled one muddy eye to glare at the Valkyrie. “Have a moose stew going at home.”

“It is a great honor to be chosen for the warriors’ glade,” said Grace.

“I make my own honor.” The berserker winced.

“Death cannot be turned away.”

“When Death comes, I’ll deal with him. Right now, I deal with you.”

“Fair.” Grace stood, gripping her great hammer in both hands. “I shall heal your wound, and then we shall fight. If I prevail, you shall feast with your foremothers in the glade tonight.”

The other Valkyries paused to watch, their dead trophies bent limp over their horses. None had ever seen such a bargain, but none dared to question their eldest sister.

“And when I prevail?” coughed the berserker.

“Then I shall return for you another day. Unless you die of natural causes.”

“I would never!” The berserker spat mud and tried to rise, her swords vibrating with power. “How dare you!”

“Then we have a bargain.” The sky blackened, roiling and rushing to cast the battlefield in shadow. A dense cloud formed over Grace and her berserker, rippling with electricity at its edges, just before the world erupted in a strike of golden lightning.

ALTERNATE FATE LORE

The Temporary Victory of the Berserker

Read Part I: The Valkyrie and The Berserker

The berserker opened one eye and took to piecing together how she’d come to be in the mud, not dead, her legs twitching. Hitting the ground she remembered; the fighting part was always a red-misted blur, but somewhere in there she’d taken an axe in the shoulder. She remembered the thunk sound, and her arm quitting, and pain.

But there was no pain now. A good thing, if temporary. She was still alive, another temporary good thing; her arm worked again too, and she still had both swords. She spat mud and slid up onto one twitchy knee, thumped her thigh with the flat of one fist. “Stoppit,” she mumbled at her jittery legs.

Wasn’t until then that she remembered the valkyrie.

Then it all came back: the bargain, the deafening crack from the sky, her spine bent backward, the scream she couldn’t release, the twitching.

The valkyrie stood nearby with a giant hammer in both hands, still and cold as winter. Waiting.

“Ready?” asked the valkyrie.

“Fair fight?” asked the berserker, finding her feet.

“Fair f –”

The berserker leaped, belly first, spine arched. Best thing, she’d always said, was hit first. She slammed into the ground a sword’s reach away from the valkyrie, her blades sunk downward, shaking the ground with death-shadow and lightning, landing ducked down so that that the warhammer whizzed just over her skull. Would’ve been a bad end, that, her head several paces from the rest of her, but the berserker wasn’t one to dwell.

She waited until the warhammer swept low, then flipped, spinning mid-air, landing with her death-sword vibrating deep inside a shield of light. She yanked the sword free, growled, and arced her light-sword upward, slicing through the shield and sending electric surges through the valkyrie’s breastplate.

The valkyrie returned with a low sweep of her warhammer that forced the berserker to jump. Behind her circling light shield, she mirrored the berserker’s lunges and ducked under her leaps, matching her one heavy hammer strike to every several sword sweeps. The world around the battling pair erupted in lightning cracks and swirling violet shadow, the ground fractured and spilling violent light beneath their boots.

Under the berserker’s tongue was the acrid taste of fear and hatred. She whirled and struck, faster, faster, striking an inch away from her ancient target and then clanging up against eternal shields, lightning twisting around lightning. The hammer circled and slammed against her leg, shattering one greave.

Her rage boiled, rose, steamed into an eye-stinging sweat, released in a scream. The valkyrie paused, hammer forward in defense. The other valkyries leaned forward on their mounts, imagining this insane beast of a woman battling on their glade. They saw, in that moment, their foes vanquished, their enemies trembling.

But it was not the fate of Rona the Berserker that day to retreat to the Nether on the mount of Grace the Valkyrie, for her swords slashed and sliced too fast for the eye to follow, and the light shields shattered, and the hammer splintered, and it was all the valkyrie could manage to keep her limbs attached to her body under the berserker’s manic rage. When the red mist had subsided, the two women stopped, breathing hard, staring one another down. An electrocuted crow fell to the ground between them and croaked its last.

“I surrender,” said Grace the Valkyrie without shame. “Stay among the living with my blessing, Berserker, and hone your skills, for one day you will feast and fight among your foremothers in the glade.”

“Not a minute before I want to,” huffed the berserker. She watched as the valkyries retreated from the battlefield, and only lowered her swords when the last of them had disappeared over the hedge into the Netherworld.

ALTERNATE FATE LORE

The Invasion of the Northmen

“Humans were few on this land in the days before the northmen.”

The young druid sat at the mouth of the cave by a cracking, spitting campfire, whittling a little wooden sword. The dark world outside was muted by falling snow. A war-torn dire wolf alpha rested with his head on the druid’s leg, his blind eyes closed, his breathing ragged. Scars striped down his body; mange had thinned his winter coat.

“The Old World had not seen war since the battles of the Elder brothers,” continued the young druid. He blew splinters away from the sword and sewed it to the hand of a little green war doll with yarn hair and button eyes. “We druids who braved these winters concerned ourselves with astronomy, engineering and philosophy. We befriended the wolf, the bear, the owl, the lemming, the stoat, the fox, the reindeer, the stink ox and the skvader. We built the temple that enclosed Elder Gudmund’s well of power.”

Inside the cave, the rest of the injured wolfpack rested, legs twitching with nightmares, stinking of the healing salve glistening on their wounds.

“But the northmen were warmakers.” The young druid fit a red button shield onto the war doll’s hand and sewed it on tight. “They cut down the sacred oak and yew to build their homes. They feared the bear, the wolf and the skvader, and hunted them to prove their strength. They killed the druids for their protests, and much learning was lost.”

He snapped the thread with his teeth. “Much learning was lost,” he whispered, staring at the doll he’d made. “The animals, who were friends of the druid and the oak and yew, went to war against the northmen. Even the reindeer and the stink oxen, who had never tasted flesh, drank the blood of war. But against the axes and fires of the northmen, the druids with their learning and the animals with their teeth and claws and hooves could not win.”

The young druid ran his fingertips down the wolf’s furry snout.

“The druids made an uneasy peace. The villages of the northmen now rise, built of compromise and blood, and we druids live among them, passing on what knowledge we can. But there is one thing on this land that the northmen must not touch: the well of power.”

The young druid petted the places on the alpha wolf not ripped and scarred, and the wolf’s blind eyes opened.

“Northmen axes imbued with the breath of Gudmund would destroy us all,” whispered the wolf.

The young druid paused with his fingers curled in the thick winter fur. “Only your family can protect the temple from the northmen.”

“For you, my friend, we shall.” The wolf stretched; a whine escaped his throat when he yawned.

“When you have healed, my friend.” The young druid offered the doll to the alpha. “Into this war doll, I have sewn a piece of the spirit of Corb, the green warrior of the undersea; he will strengthen you.”

The alpha took the doll from the young druid between his front paws and and settled into anxious sleep.
