ALTERNATE FATE LORE

The Sweethearts

“Celeste! Yo, where’d you go?”

“I’m up here, taking care of the sweethearts.”

Vox poked his head out of the window and looked up. Celeste’s long black hair spilled down as she waved at her brother from the roof.

Vox climbed out and swung up to join her. “Sweethearts? Whaddya mean … whoa.” On the roof, Celeste was busy watering a crowded garden full of butterflies. Bright orange and pink zinnias shared sunlight with golden sunflowers and purple verbenae. Butterflies socialized on firecracker vines, sipped from milkweeds and dangled from nectar-filled feeders hanging from wooden house-shaped boxes. All different colors and patterns zoomed together in pairs. A Blue Pansy landed on Vox’s nose and combed his eyelashes with its antennae.

“The sweethearts like to drink from the flowers,” said Celeste. “The caterpillars need the dill and violets and clovers.” She pointed to herby-smelling boxes where caterpillars munched and larvae hung out. “I take care of their host plants and nectar plants, and I keep the spiders and ants away.”

“Uh, Sis,” said Vox, swiping away the butterfly on his nose, “this is pretty and everything, but sweethearts are people. Bugs aren’t people.”

Celeste set down her watering can and smiled at her twin. “Butterflies are people who were in love but couldn’t be together. Didn’t you know that?”

Vox’s eyes widened at a pair of Red Lacewings spiraling through the air together. “Butterflies … used to be people?”

“And now they can be together.” She held out her finger and a big orange butterfly landed on it. “This kind is called an Orange Julia.”

Vox stepped close, peering at the basking butterfly. “Does … does this one have a sweetheart?”

“Not yet.” Celeste whispered to the Julia, and it fluttered over to rest on Vox’s ear. “But I’ll take care of her until her sweetheart comes.”

Midsummer Developer Update

  • Vainglory

  • Jul 14, 2017

We always knew that perfecting the five-minute Vainglory experience would be a challenge, and the release of Talents for BRAWL game modes has been equal parts exciting and humbling. As a company and community, we hit a major promised milestone for 2017, and player participation in Blitz, Battle Royale and Talents has sharply spiked. That said, between the data and community feedback, we’ve also learned there’s a long way to go to “perfection.” Here’s what you’ve told us with your collective voices:

Celebrate Vainglory’s Global Release Anniversary with 48-Hour Relay Stream, Giveaways & More

VAINGLORY GLOBAL LAUNCH ANNIVERSARY

Vainglory has officially been available around the world on more than 150 devices for nearly two years, opening doors to unforgettable, mobile PvP experiences in the Halcyon Fold to countless players.

Two years ago, we celebrated this milestone by kicking off a 24-hour stream that included participants from Australia, Japan, South Korea, Spain and more. This year, we’re turning it up a notch by broadcasting for twice as long with a 48-hour relay stream starting June 28 at 3PM PDT at twitch.tv/vainglory.

Sandwiched between the open and close of this celebratory stream, which will begin and end with developers at our office in San Mateo, California, will be prominent streamers from Vainglory’s biggest global communities (full list of streamers below). Make sure to watch as during each step of the relay we’ll be giving away up to 500 ICE to five different lucky viewers every hour; winners will be selected at random. This 48-hour stream concludes June 30 at 3PM PDT.

We cannot thank you enough for the valuable feedback you’ve provided over the last two years that’s helped shape Vainglory into the mobile experience it is today. We hope that you’ll drop by twitch.tv/vainglory and join us in celebration.

NEW HERO: GRACE

bottom_bracket

When she’s not pummeling enemies into submission with her mace, Grace excels at keeping her teammates alive with holy shields and massive single-target heals. Pick up her talents in BRAWL game modes to unleash an even more powerful paladin.

Grace will be unlockable with ICE only for the first seven days. Afterward, you will be able to unlock her with ICE or Glory.

HERO ABILITIES

bottom_bracket

RETRIBUTION (HEROIC PERK)

Grace chains her normal basic attack into a ground slam, dealing bonus weapon damage and slowing enemies in a wide area. If enemies are hit by the ground slam, her ability cooldowns are reduced.

BENEDICTION (A)

Grace dashes to her target, striking them with an empowered Retribution attack. Nearby allies instantly gain a directional holy shield that continually faces the target, while Grace gains a full holy shield that protects her from all sides. The holy shield reduces incoming damage that strikes the shield.

Upon learning this ability, Grace permanently reduces all damage she receives. This effect and the holy shield scale with crystal power.

On Overdrive, this skill is refreshed upon casting Divine Intervention.

HOLY NOVA (B)

After a short delay, Grace knocks enemies into the air and disables them for a short time. If the attack hits at least one enemy, Grace immediately recovers from the ability.

On Overdrive, Grace gains immunity to negative effects when casting this ability.

DIVINE INTERVENTION (ULTIMATE)

Grace instantly surrounds herself and her target with a full holy shield and begins channeling after which Grace’s target receives a massive heal.

DOUBLE BENEDICTION (EPIC)

Benediction (A) has charges. Shorter cooldown but lower damage reduction.

UNITED FRONT (LEGENDARY)

Divine Intervention (ultimate) also heals Grace. Shorter cooldown but lower healing.

MARKET CHANGES

TALENT COINS REMOVED FROM MYSTERY CHESTS

While the response to talents has been quite positive overall, we did notice one consistent point of feedback: Players missed the old Mystery Chests. It’s clear that players want to be able to choose when to get talents and when to get skins and heroes. We heard you, so we’re removing talent coins from all Mystery Chests. This way, you can open Talent Chests when you want talents and open Mystery Chests when you want heroes and skins. Please keep your feedback coming. — Playoffbeard

‘HOLD-TO-CONFIRM’ ON BULK TALENT PURCHASES

We’re making the button on bulk Talent Coin purchases from the Daily Pick 3 push-and-hold to ensure you don’t accidentally burn all your Glory by mistake.

head_bracket

LIVE GAME IMPROVEMENTS

bottom_bracket

When the year started, we laid out our vision and priorities for 2017, starting with improving our short BRAWL game modes. Now that talents has launched, it’s time to start delivering on our next focus area: Live Game Improvements (a.k.a “Buttery Smooth”).

In Update 2.6, we’re focusing on player pain related to in-game communication.

PRESET MESSAGES

You’ll now have access to a variety of new quick messages that can be accessed by tapping on the new “message” ping, which is located where the “?” ping used to be. Encourage allies to buy defense items, purchase more vision, push to win and much more.

Like social and tactical pings, quick messages will restrict the amount of phrases that can be sent within a certain interval of time. As an extra ping-SPAM deterrent, time-sensitive communications like ‘GLHF!’ and ‘GG!’ can only be used during the opening or closing moments of each match.

ITEM RECOMMENDATIONS

We’ve all been in there: You — very politely of course — want to tell your captain to first-buy an Atlas Pauldron to deal with the enemy Krul … but you can’t. Or, perhaps you’re desperate for your teammate to grab a Crucible to block those Phinn Forced Accords. Maybe you’re just worried that the carry and the jungler are both building crystal and will be too easy to counterbuild. Whatever the scenario, the new item recommendation option will allow you to suggest any item to a specific ally at anytime during a match.

ABILITIES COOLDOWN TIMER

You can now easily communicate ability cooldown times with the tap of an icon. You know what this means, right? You’re one step closer to coordinating those crazy wombo combos you’ve always dreamed of. It means that when you’re not ready for a teamfight because your ult’s on cooldown, you can let your team know!

All these comms additions are a direct response input from the Vainglory Community. We know that you were struggling to convey certain thoughts, and we hope these changes address those woes.

QUESTS TRIUMPHANT RETURN

That didn’t take long. We maaay have made a mistake by removing the top and bottom quest slots, and you all were quick to express your disappointment. The good news? They’re back. Our commitment is that we will always pay attention to the voices in the player community, and when we need to course-correct, we will. We may have made a bad call, but we’ll always make it right.

SUMMER SEASON BEGINS

bottom_bracket

COLLECT YOUR SEASON-ENDING PAYOUT

Congratulations on battling your way through Vainglory’s Spring season! Open the app to collect your payout and seasonal Ranked trophy now! Then use your season-ending payout toward a hero you’ve been eyeballing or a brand new talent coin to spice up your BRAWL experience.

GET BETTER PAYOUTS NEXT SEASON
How did you fare last season? Did you cash in on the enticing 750 glory bonus awarded for joining a guild for the first time? Were you active enough to ensure you and your guildmates walked away with a big season-ending payout? Remember, these are totally free ways to earn some extra glory while making new friends and securing more reliable allies for Ranked play. If you missed out, make sure to check out the guild tab in the app to find a group of like-minded players for summer season!

WHAT’S A SOFT VISUAL SKILL TIER RESET?

When you open the app for the first time during Summer season, you’ll notice that your visual skill tier has dropped by approximately one tier. Smaller reductions and in some cases increases apply to players whose skill tiers have decayed. This will give you room to climb in Summer season, and give you a chance to hopefully reach your highest tier ever.

Your highest skill tier achieved during each season will still be immortalized in your trophy cabinet.

Ranked will now also have a “decay floor” for players who take a break from the Halcyon Fold, meaning you won’t decay indefinitely. This should ensure that their sabbaticals don’t interfere with how they’re matched with other players upon return.

head_bracket

MATCHMAKING CHANGES

bottom_bracket

HOW MATCHMAKING IS CHANGING IN 2.6 & BEYOND
In the the coming months, we’re making some of the biggest changes to matchmaking ever. Our commitment is to make Ranked play the fairest, most rewarding competitive experience possible. Here’s what’s in store:

  • We are testing out our biggest change ever to our matchmaking algorithm starting in Update 2.6. We will observe the results and tune throughout the rest of the year.
  • Anticipate fairer matches and shorter matchmaking times.
  • Soon, we’ll reintroduce the “one tier” rule where players may only party queue with friends one tier above or below them in rank.

Matchmaking is very much a living and breathing entity that’s continuously adapting to your needs. We’re already testing more changes for beyond 2.6. Expect frequent tuning over the coming updates. We take the Ranked experience very seriously and are committed to “buttery smoothness” throughout. Collectively, all these changes should reduce perceived instances of mismatched games while maintaining the sense of progression and achievement that each new Vainglory season offers. We look forward to your feedback.

NOTE: Baron’s balance changes, which were scheduled to go live in Update 2.6, have yet to be implemented. We’re exploring options for a quick fix.

GRUMPJAW

STUFFED

LANCE

GYTHIAN WALL

  • Cooldown up from 9-8-7-6-5 to 9.0-8.5-8.0-7.5-7.0 seconds

COMBAT ROLL
Granting a bit more damage to the empowered basic attack after using this ability which should help Lance be a bit more of a damage threat on the battlefield. —Zekent

Grace Abilities & Splash Art Reveal

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Jun 14, 2017

Grace leads her team into battle by charging forward with her giant mace. Utilizing the power of the Light, she protects her allies by granting them holy shields that greatly reduce incoming damage. When the fight seems bleak, she can turn the tides of battle by calling upon the Seraphim to dish out massive single-target heals.

Read on for Grace’s abilities…

head_bracket

GRACE IN COMBAT

It is a good idea to buy some crystal power on Grace, even when played as a Captain, because it strengthens the power of her holy shields as well as her passive damage reduction.

Whenever possible, use Retribution not only for the additional damage and slow but also for the cooldown reduction on her abilities. This works while attacking any enemy, not just heroes, so it’s beneficial to attack jungle monsters and lane minions when you need to use your important abilities.

Benediction is a great skill to initiate fights but is also a very powerful defensive ability: Use it on the most threatening enemy hero to greatly reduce the amount of damage that your team takes.

Holy Nova has a delay, making it easy for enemies to evade. Make sure to position yourself as close to the enemy as possible before casting it.

While Divine Intervention reduces damage on allies when cast, the heal does not come until after a short channel. Be wary when casting her Ultimate on critically low allies because they may die before the heal occurs.

Keep an eye on the News section for more Grace info and guides. Enemies of the Light should be fearful of her mace in Update 2.6!

Where the Soul Hides

As the end drew close, Reim climbed the highest peak in the Kalls, casting his last insults upon the Grangor, patting snow beasts and cave trolls on their heads in farewell. He settled on the summit and let the thin air lull him to sleep, ready to die in the oblivion of dreams.

The Valkyrie, his longtime companion, joined him. Reim bid her goodbye and released her from his service.

“Do not die,” she said.

“Leave me alone, wench,” he muttered, and closed his eyes.

The Valkyrie protested, then nudged, then shook him, but his breaths came farther and farther apart, and he spoke no more. So she knelt down and kissed him, inhaling his soul.

She flew out of the Kalls, over the icy ocean, into the warm air, holding her breath day and night. On the Isle of the Selkies, she sketched out her plan on smoothed sand and the selkies agreed, for the price of one hundred Valkyrie tears. The Valkyrie thought of her old friend dying and wept her golden tears into the cupped palms of the amphibious creatures.

One of the selkies laid an egg and handed it to her, warm and new. A tiny hole was poked into the shell, and into it the Valkryie exhaled the soul of Reim. The egg was plugged shut, and then the selkies snatched down a swooping seabird and stuffed the egg whole down its throat. The bird, despite its wild protest, was stuffed whole down the throat of a crocodile, and while the reptile coughed up feathers, the selkies locked it inside a magic box encrusted with corals and shells. The selkies dragged the locked box into the sea, buried it under a wrecked ship and stood guard.

The Valkyrie returned and rejoiced to find Reim still breathing. She told him what she had done and he cursed her, for he had enjoyed the idea of death, but she was accustomed to his curses and paid him no mind.

It is said that Reim still wanders the world with an ice-forged dragon staff, and though his body goes through the death changes, he can never be killed except by one who can defeat the selkie guards, dig under the wrecked ship, unlock the magic box, swim fast enough to catch the escaped crocodile, fly high enough to catch the flying seabird, then remove the egg from inside it.

We’re adjusting the front-of-app presentation to make it easier to participate and track progress in your reward chests.

‘5-HERO CHEST’

‘SLOT 2’ QUESTS

  • The quests regularly featured in “Slot 2” have been your most popular, both in terms of participation and player excitement. We are retaining these quests, which will continue to appear and function as you’ve come to expect.

TALENTS REWARDS

  • Some players might not even realize that you are rewarded with bonus Glory for your First Win of the Day, Third Win of the Day and “Sinister Seven,” which is achieved when you win a match seven days in a row. A new, prominent presentation of these win bonuses takes over “Slot 3” and will fill in as you make reward progress. With the introduction of talents, Glory has never been more important. We hope this helps ensure you don’t miss out on free daily rewards.

As previously announced, if you have a quest in Slot 1 or Slot 3 in progress when Update 2.5 hits, you will lose that progress. Finish your quests while you still can!

DODGING AND LOW PRIORITY QUEUE CHANGES

bottom_bracket

Dodge Changes

Shortly after Update 2.4 rolled out, our team pushed a hotfix to address a recurring issue plaguing a wide range of players: match dodging (leaving during or immediately after Hero Select). Because dodging was hardly penalized — if at all — players adopted dodging as a tactic, abusing it to avoid any match with unfavorable conditions. This was so rampant that some players couldn’t get into a match, as someone else dodged every time. This dodging epidemic wasted players’ time, and it was especially frustrating after first waiting patiently in queue, only to then have their patience tested over and over as they suffered through each dodge.

To dramatically reduce the number of match dodges, we instituted a strict penalty, which continues to be in effect: If you dodge a Ranked match, you will lose visual skill tier approximately equal to if you lost that match.

Following the release of this hotfix, feedback from the Vainglory Community poured in, expressing that there was another important dimension to the problem. That leads us to …

Low Priority Queue Changes

Some players expressed concern with the dodge changes, saying that dodging was their only recourse to avoid blatant trolling behavior. And while Super Evil continues to believe that dodging is an act of trolling itself, we definitely understand that feeling of victimization when stuck with players perceived as trolls. As a first step to rectify this underlying issue, we are significantly increasing Low Priority Queue punishments for detected and player-reported trolling behavior.

For those unfamiliar, the LPQ is a “penalty box” where you must sit around and wait for the punishment clock to expire before you can play your next match … and you must complete a series of LPQ matches before you are released back into the regular queuing experience.

The LPQ identifies bad behavior as:

  • Excessively declining matches
  • Dodging
  • Rude pinging
  • Trolling / Intentional Losing
  • Going AFK (abandoning matches)

Each of the aforementioned offenses is worth a varying punishment level; in some instances, it takes several infractions of the same type to earn a level. The more levels accumulated, the harsher the LPQ punishment.

Our hope is these LPQ changes will prevent the types of trolling behavior that cause players to feel the need to dodge — or cause players to have negative game experiences. This is not a silver bullet. It will not eliminate the issue. But we belief and hope it will substantially help, and we look forward to your feedback after release.

HERO BALANCE CHANGES

bottom_bracket

ARDAN

Julia’s Gift
Ardan’s gear was due for a bit of a tune-up. This should make him far more effective at soaking up damage for his allies. —Zekent

  • Health gained up from 1% to 1.5%

BAPTISTE

BAD MOJO
With a few bumps to his crystal ratios, enemies need to be even more wary when Baptiste is empowered. —Zekent

  • Impact crystal ratio up from 90% to 110%
  • Explosion crystal ratio up from 45% to 55%

ORDAINED
This increase in range makes Baptiste a far more threatening hero to face off against. Mobile heroes beware… Baptiste will find you! —Zekent

  • Range up from 5 to 6

GENERAL

  • Baptiste’s Fear effects have been updated

CATHERINE

CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD
A slight increase to the power of this perk makes Catherine a bit more durable later in the game if she has been diligently acquiring stacks. —Zekent

  • Armor/Shield granted per stack up from 1 to 2

GLAIVE

AFTERBURN
While Glaive is meant to single out opponents, he was able to use this ability far too often, making him both incredibly hard to escape from and catch up to. —Zekent

  • Cooldown up from 22-20-18-16-10 to 22-20-18-16-12

GRUMPJAW

GENERAL

  • Grumpjaw now has a crystal recommended item path
  • Grumpjaw’s Grumpy now dashes to the target location rather than behind it

GWEN

BOOMSTICK
This change makes Gwen a bit less oppressive in the late game where she could eviscerate targets with low defense. —Zekent

  • Weapon ratio down from 45% to 35%

KESTREL

GLIMMERSHOT
This increase to the energy cost will force Kestrel to be a bit more careful when firing off barrages of arrows. —Zekent

  • Energy cost up from 50 to 60

ONE SHOT ONE KILL
We can’t have this cost less than Glimmershot now can we? —Zekent

  • Energy cost up from 50 to 60

LYRA

STATS
Lyra’s early-game pressure was unparalleled with her high amounts of healing paired with her incredible attack range. While her healing is still high, she will put herself in harm’s way if she wants to harass her foes. —Zekent

  • Basic attack range down from 6.6 to 5.1

IMPERIAL SIGIL
It’s back! Well… partially back! While the burst heal is incredibly potent, Lyra needs to make snappy decisions when trying to heal up her team. Leaving the sigil out longer is more healing overall, but sometimes a quick burst of health can save an ally in danger. —Zekent

  • New: When reactivated, will immediately consume the remaining duration to heal at 60% effectiveness

ARCANE PASSAGE
With the changes to this ability, Lyra can regain her lost attack range while increasing the distance at which she can change the landscape of a skirmish. —Zekent

  • Range up from 9-10-11 to 9-11-13 meters
  • New: Passively increases attack range by 1.0-1.5-2.0 meters

PETAL

BRAMBLEBOOM SEEDS
While taking out Petal’s munions is still a viable strategy when it comes to playing against her, she is able to summon more far too quickly. This slight increase in cooldown will give her enemies more time to put pressure on her. —Zekent

  • Cooldown increased from 2.5 to 3 seconds

SAW

STATS
Bringing SAW’s defensive stats up to the standard of most other heroes. —Zekent

  • Armor and Shield up from 8-76 to 20-86

SPIN UP
Getting rid of an often overlooked piece of SAW’s perk and granting it back to SAW’s base stats. —Zekent

  • Removed bonus Armor and Shield per stack

SKAARF

GOOP
This change makes it so that Skaarf can’t instantaneously burst down his enemies. Instead, proper placement of his Goop pool is needed to truly see his power. —Zekent

  • Ignite damage down from 80-120-160-200-240 to 40-60-80-100-120
  • Burn damage up from 60-90-120-150-180 to 60-100-140-180-220

TAKA

HOUSE KAMUHA
A pair of sharpened blades for Taka! —Zekent

  • Weapon ratio up from 30% to 35%

VOX

PULSE
The slow on this ability made it a bit too difficult for melee heroes to keep up with Vox… but only a bit.—Zekent

  • Slow at center down from 20-22-24-26-30% to 15-17-19-21-25%

  • Cooldown up from 15 seconds to 20 seconds
  • Duration down from 5 seconds to 4 seconds
  • Attack speed reduction down from 65% to 50%
